Components

All of the following components are used throughout our workshop projects. More information on how to use these components can be found on our resources page.

Arduino Uno

The Arduino is the basis of all our projects. It houses an ATMega328p microcontroller which can be programmed to do pretty much anything you can think of with electronics.

Arduino Uno Sensor Shield

These Sensor Shields are designed to fit on any standard Arduino Uno board and allow for the connection of all our components via servo type connectors. Provides access to Ground, Volts and Signal (negative 5v, positive 5v and signal) on all 14 digital pins and 6 analog pins. Also provides access to other standard signal configurations.

New Arduino Uno

This style of Arduino Uno has all the breakout pins on the main board, eliminating the need for a separate sensor shield. This means it can fit better into your project or kit box. It also has colour-coded pin connections to make it less likely to wire items “backwards”. It still has all the functionality of a standard Uno board and can still have standard shields connected to it.

9V Battery Clip

These rugged battery clips are a moulded hard plastic clip with a 90 degree 2.1mm power plug, which enables more flexible options for battery placement.

Pushbutton

Pre-wired with standard servo type connector.
These pushbuttons are mounted in standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are prewired with resistors so can be directly connected to an Arduino input, via a “sensor shield”.

Potentiometer

Pre-wired with standard servo type connector.
These Pots are mounted in standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are prewired so can be directly connected to an Arduino analog input via a “sensor shield”.

Light Sensor (Phototransistor)

Pre-wired with standard servo type connector.
These light sensors are mounted in standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are prewired with resistors so can be directly connected to an Arduino input via a “sensor shield”.

Coloured LEDs

Colours: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue
Pre-wired with standard servo type connector.
These LEDs are mounted in standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are prewired with a resistor so can be directly connected to an Arduino output. The servo connector allows the LEDs to be connected via a “sensor shield”.

White LED

Pre-wired with standard servo type connector.
Bright white, high intensity LED.
These bright white LEDs are mounted in standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are prewired with resistors so can be directly connected to an Arduino output via a “sensor shield”. These are intended to be used with the Light Sensor for light beam interruption projects.

8-way Jumper Wires

These coloured jumper wires are grouped together to make connections with the 7 Segment display easier to manage.

4-way Jumper Wires

These coloured jumper wires are grouped together to make connections with the LCD display and motor driver easier to manage.

2-way Jumper Wires

These coloured jumper wires are grouped together to make connections with the motor driver and shift register easier to manage.

Servomotor

These are standard 9G servos that have been mounted on standard plastic construction plates to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks.

Servo Type Connection Wire

These servo type wires are used to make connections with the shift register easier to manage.

Servo Type Extension Lead

These servo type wires are used to extend any component that has a standard servo connection. Male to female connection.

Servo Type Y-Lead

These leads are used to break one output of the Arduino into two outputs. Using more than two of these on an output is not recommended.

44mm Red 7-Segment Display Module

Pre-wired with resistors for Arduino compatibility.
Pins labelled for simple wiring.
Common cathode.
Can be supplied with or without construction block feet.
These 7 segment displays are mounted on a convenient circuit board with resistors already in place to enable direct connection to the Arduino output pins. The input pins of the circuit board are labelled to make the connections to the Arduino simple. Individual segments can then be controlled using simple programming on your Arduino.
The displays can be used with our Shift Register modules to daisy chain multiple displays using only three Arduino outputs.

6V DC Motor

These motors are mounted on standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. Worm drive connection to gears. Connection to an Arduino is via a motor driver which can be purchased separately.

Motor Driver Module

2 x L9110 “H” bridge driver chips.
3V – 12 V voltage range.
800mA maximum current.
High quality screw terminal connectors. Small screwdriver included.
These modules are mounted on standard plastic construction bricks to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks. They are designed to work with our 6V DC motors which can be purchased separately. Two motors can be controlled with one module.

LCD Screen

These LCD screens are wired with an I2C adaptor so they only require the SDA and SCL connections of the Arduino.

Thermistor

These are temperature sensitive devices that can be used with the Arduino to detect changes in temperature. Wired with a standard servo type connection.

Mini Speaker Module

This mini speaker is attached to a small construction brick panel to enable it to be built into your project. The speaker is the same type that goes into a mobile phone, so it is not super loud, but certainly audible.

Shift Register Module

Pre-wired with resistors for Arduino compatibility.
Pins labelled for simple wiring.
Utilises HC595 shift register chip.
These shift register modules are pre-wired and designed to be used with our 7 segment display modules. They are labelled to make connection to your Arduino simple. Multiple shift registers can be daisy chained together to control more than one & segment display using only three Arduino output pins.

Stepper Motor

These 5-volt stepper motors come with a driver are mounted on a standard plastic construction panel to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks.

Ultrasonic Sensor

These modules use ultrasound to measure distance to objects and are mounted on a standard plastic construction plate to allow them to be utilised with the most common types of construction bricks.

Infra-Red Transmitter and Receiver

These consist of an infra-red LED mounted in bricks, and a standard infra-red receiver as used in TV’s for remote control (38khz receiver.) also mounted on bricks.
